Village Recycling and Trash
The Village Department of Public Works (DPW) removes trash from the receptacles in the Village Business district. The DPW does not pick up residential trash. Village residents are responsible for the pickup and disposal of household trash.
Residential trash removal is arranged with independent curbside haulers by the resident. For a list of curbside haulers in our area, please visit this Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency (UCRRA) "Find a Curbside Hauler" page. If you are new to Saugerties and would like opinions about one hauler versus another, you can ask on such social sites as https://nextdoor.com (requires sign-up) or the Saugerties Village Facebook page (supported by residents -- not a Village-government page).
The Village DPW provides “Spring Cleanup” – Village residents may clean up their property and put yard waste - brush, limbs and leaves - curbside to be picked up. In the Fall the DPW provides “Leaf Pickup” – residents may rake their leaves to the curb for pickup. The brush and leaves are processed into mulch. The dates for these cleanup/pickup days are typically around:
- Mid-April for Spring Cleanup - (You can include discarded Christmas trees, as long as the tree's trunk is less than 6 inches in diameter and has been cut into lengths that are less than 6 feet)
- Mid-November for the Fall Leaf Pickup
For specific dates, please stay tuned to the Village home page and the Village Facebook page, and/or TV23.
Steele Place Yard Waste - A convenience for Saugerties residents
On Wednesdays and Saturdays, Saugerties residents have the option to use a Village Steele Place location for disposal of yard waste, as well as garbage and recycling. Please visit the Village DPW page's Steele Place section for more information. That section includes a map of how to get to Steele PLace.
Town Recycling and Trash

Disposal of Hazardous Materials
The sections that follow cover disposal of household hazardous materials in general, then they go into specifics regarding electronics, prescription medicines, paint, batteries, motor oil and hypodermic needles (sharps).
Disposal of Household Hazardous Materials
First, the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency offers a handy A-to-Z list of recyclable items, covering whether they items can be recycled at UCRRA events, or if not, what other recycling options are available. That list is called the RECYCLOPEDIA - https://ucrra.org/recyclopedia/
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events
The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency (UCRRA) invests over $100,000 every year for the safe disposal of residential toxic wastes. This program is offered at no cost to Ulster County residents. The UCRRA Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Events are an environmentally-sound and convenient way for Ulster County residents to dispose of hazardous materials for free.
Specifically, each year, the UCRRA holds 4 Household Hazardous Waste collection events. Typical locations and timings for these events are: New Paltz (April), Kingston (June), New Paltz (August) and Kingston (October).
These events have concluded for 2023. We will update this section (typically in March) when the new dates are published for the UCRRA recycling events for 2024.
Electronics
The Saugerties Transfer Station no longer accepts electronics. From April until the 3rd week or so in November, electronics *are* accepted at the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency site. If you want to get rid of electronics and you are not in the April-November timeframe, you can look up what your options are on the Recyclopedia Electronics page - https://ucrra.org/recyclopedia/?_sf_s=electronics
A general tip is that if you need to dispose of electronics, consider that Staples in Kingston not only accepts old, discarded computers and computer printers, but also gives you credits for the return of these items, if you're part of their frequent buyer program. (Essentially, they will take and recycle any electronics other than kitchen appliances and TVs.)
Prescription Medicines
We all want clean, healthy drinking water. But one hazard that is affecting the quality and healthfulness of our drinking water is the number of prescription medicines that find their way into our water supply.
If you want to help by avoiding improper disposal of prescription meds, there is an easy solution available to you in Saugerties. Just enter Town Hall through the Police Department/Court entrance, and within a few steps, on the right, is this prescription medicines dropbox, in amongst the vending machines:
Paint
It is now more convenient than ever to recycle paint in New York. The New York paint stewardship program called PaintCare launched May 1 or so, and they offer drop-off sites throughout the state where the public can take unwanted paint for recycling. These sites will be available to households, businesses, government agencies, and others with leftover paint in New York.
So, if you have oil-based paint or latex/acrylic paints to recycle, you can drop the oil-based paint cans off at the above Hazardous Home Waste events. But up until now, the recommendations for latex/acrylic paints were to use sand or kitty litter to solidify the remaining paint and the dispose of them in your regular garbage flow for pick-up. As of May 1st, 2022, you now have the additional option, for both oil-based and latex/acrylic paints, to bring them to the PaintCare-designated sites. The 2 Ulster County sites (and 1 nearby-to-Saugerties Greene County site) that accept paints to be recycled are:
- Sherwin-Williams Paint Store, 568 Albany Avenue, Kingston (845-339-6994)
- Herzog's True-Value Home Center, 151 Kingston Plaza Road, Kingston (845-338-6300)
- Sherwin-Williams Paint Store, 44 Grandview Plaza, Catskill (518-943-4910)
These designations change over time, so be sure to call ahead before planning to bring your paint to any of the above stores.
For more information about this paint recycling program, you can visit the https://www.paintcare.org/ site or go directly to their drop-off locator page - https://www.paintcare.org/drop-off-sites/
Batteries
Battery disposal can be tricky ...
For example, at the aforementioned UCRRA events, batteries are not accepted. However, the Ulster County Recyclopedia site does offer recycle options (some involving private businesses) for recycling Alkaline, Automotive and Rechargeable (including NiCad and Lithium) batteries.
Motor Oil (and compact fluorescent lamps and desktop computers, and ...)
If you change your own motor oil, you may find that you have some stored oil that you need to dispose of.
If that's the case, a useful website is earth911.com. You can learn about where to dispose of various hazardous waste items by visiting the page and clicking on this link:
You will be brought to a page where you can enter what you're searching for, and "12477" as the zip code.
